Letter from Charlotte to Samuel Cowles, 1839 November.
1839-11
Cowles, Charlotte, 1820-1866
Letter from Charlotte Cowles in Farmington, Connecticut, to her brother Samuel Cowles in Hartford, Connecticut. Charlotte told Samuel to hold on to the letter until he came home at Thanksgiving. Mother could be very suspicious of items arriving by post. A parcel came the other evening from Mr. Hawley with notices and a pamphlet entitled "Why Work for the Slave?" Father had to prevent mother from opening the package. If Samuel does send the letter on, he was to hide it in one of his own.
