Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. Lauderdale County
This folder consists primarily of program reports, dating January to October of 1964, relating to the CORE and COFO Community Center and Voter Registration Program in Meridian, Mississippi. Most reports are written by Michael ("Mickey") Schwerner as Program Director before his murder in June of 1964, as well as Rita Schwerner and Pat Walker. The reports are optimistic when describing the progress and use of the community center and note future plans for development. Reports also note the success of business boycotts and the resulting arrests, as well as the need for more funds. Also noted is the difficulty reaching people in Neshoba County, including Philadelphia, where Schwerner, Chaney and Goodman would be murdered that summer. Of specific importance is the report dating June 28, in which the status of the three missing men is detailed. After this report, the remaining documents describe future events in Meridian with a new set of staff members.
