On verso, the letter is addressed to "Rev. Samiel May Jr. Leicester Mass." and it is postmarked with a black, circular stamp reading, "Brooklyn Ct. Oct 21."
James B. Whitcomb writes to Samuel May stating that the planned convention in Danielsonville, Connecticut has pushed a proposed meeting against the Fugitive Slave Law in Brooklyn, Connecticut back one week. Whitcomb hopes the postponement will allow them to "secure a speaker from that meeting to talk to the Brooklyn people." He tells May that, "all seem to be alive now upon the subject, but should we let the matter rest for awhile, the public would be lulled to sleep again by the party publications of the day." He warns that the idea that the Fugitive Slaw Law "is not so odious after all" as it merely enforces a constitutional requirement "will be swallowed by a great many of the Locos [Democrats] and if the Whigs see the Locos gaining ground on that tact, they probably will chime in to secure the stray ones in their party." Whitcomb then asks May to stay after the convention in Danielsonville to attend the meeting in Brooklyn.
