Inscribed on negative envelope: "August 30, 1960; Willie Jean Black, Donita Gaines, Arthur Simmons; integrated Northside; police escorts; 'uneventful.'" On August 30, 1961, nine African American students became the first to attend four previously all white public high schools in Atlanta: Thomas Franklin Welch, Madelyn Patricia Nix, Willie Jean Black, Donita Gaines, Arthur Simmons, Lawrence Jefferson, Mary James McMullen, Martha Ann Holmes and Rosalyn Walton.
